Unit 3, Quiz #1
2017-18

Your first quiz of the course will be on Thursday, October 26 and cover material from Chapter 8 of the textbook. Quiz questions will target the following objectives.

  1. The student should be able to use mass spectrometer data to determine the average atomic mass of an element and explain how the average atomic mass values are used as a relative measure of the mass of an atom of any element.

    Resources: Read Chapter 8.1-2;  Atomic Mass Spectroscopy (p. 1); Atomic Mass - It's Relative (p. 2);  Chapter 8.1-3 Reading Guide (pp. 3-4)

  2. The student should be able to explain how to count the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in a sample of matter using the mass of the sample.

    Resources: Read Chapter 8.1-2;  Chapter 8.1-3 Reading Guide (pp. 3-4); Counting Atoms (p. 5);  The Mole and Atomic Mass (p. 6)

  3. The student should understand the mole concept and use Avogadro's number and molar mass values as conversion factors to convert between the number of particles, the moles of particles, and the mass.

    Resources: Read Chapter 8.3-5;  Chapter 8.5-6 Reading Guide (pp. 7-8); Molar Mass of Compounds (p. 9);  Mole Conversions (pp. 11-12);

  4. The student should be able to calculate the mass percent of the various elements in a compound if given the name or the chemical formula of the compound.

    Resources: Read Chapter 8.6;  Chapter 8.5-6 Reading Guide (pp. 7-8); Molar Mass and Percent Composition (pp. 13-14)

  5. The student should be able to use mass composition data in order to determine the emperical formula of an unknown compound and use the emperical formula and molar mass to determine the molecular formula of a compound.

    Resources: Read Chapter 8.7-8.9;  Chapter 8.7-8.9 Reading Guide (pp. 15-16);  Mass Composition and Emperical and Molecular Formulas (pp. 17-18); Crash of Avogadro Airlines Flight 1023 (pp. 19-20)
