Unit 1, Quiz #1
Your first quiz of the course will be on Friday, September 7 and
cover material from Chapters 2 and 3 of the textbook. Quiz questions
will target the following objectives.
- The student should understand basic principles of
measurement, the most important of which pertains to obtaining a
measurement to the proper precision by including an uncertain digit
with all the certain digits. This also includes an understanding of
significant digits in both measurement and mathematical processes

- The student should be able to use equivalency statements
to create conversion factors and use such conversion factors to perform

- The student should be able to determine the density of an object from laboratory measurements.

- The student should be able to use the definitions of
chemical and physical properties and chemical and physical changes in
order to identify properties and changes as being either chemical or
physical in nature.

- The student should be able to distinguish between pure
substances and mixtures, between elements and compounds, and between
homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures and use such
distinctions to classify samples of matter.
