Unit 9 Schedule
2010-2011


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is updated as the unit progresses.  


Day 1:  Wednesday, February 23

Lesson Plan:
  • Organization: notebooks, grades; introduce new unit; packet
  • Potential energy well diagrams; demo w/carts, track, springs and magnets; do #1-2 of unit packet
  • Discuss bond polarity, EN difference, ionic, polar covalent and nonpolar covalent;  do #3-8 on pp. 1-2 of unit packet
  • If time allows, start To Give, To Take, and To Share (pp. 3-8)

Homework:
  • Chapter 7:0-1a Reading Sheet
  • Complete Packet - pp. 1-3

Announcements:
  • The unit on Chemical Bonding will last for a little more than two weeks.  There will be two labs, several reading sheets, a skit, a pop quiz and a few WebAssigns.

Day 2:  Thursday, February 24

Lesson Plan:
  • Review/check answers on p. 3 of Packet (bond polarity, EN difference, ionic, polar covalent and nonpolar covalent)
  • Discuss ionic bonding in KCl and CaCl2; do #3-4 on p. 4
  • Discuss covalent bonding and electron pair sharing:  valence electrons, octet rule, Lewis electron dot diagrams, #5 on p. 4
  • Do some simple Lewis Structures (p. 5, #6)
  • Check Chapt. 7.0-1a Rdg Sheet (pp. 19-20)

Homework:

  • Discuss molecular geometry; study packet, pp. 9-10 and begin selected problems on pp. 33-36
  • Check Chapter 7:2 Reading Sheet (pp. 23-24)

  • Review polar bonds;  relate polarity of molecule to its polar bonds and molecular shape

  • And you thought atomic orbital theory was difficult;  now you get to learn about hybridized orbital theory.

  • Continue Hybridized Orbital Theory; selected examples from pp. 11-12
  • Introduce intermolecular forces;  #4-5 on pp. 14-16
  • Check Chapter 7.4 Reading Sheet (pp. 27-28)

Announcements:
  • Having difficulty with the textbook readings?  A science book doesn't read like a novel;  treat it differently. Slow down, thumb back a few pages; jot yourself a few notes; draw a diagram or a concept map; wrestle with it; read it twice; read it thrice. Don't assume it will be an easy read; learning is indeed an endothermic process.
  • There is a test on Friday, March 11;  lab notebooks will be collected prior to the test.
