Unit 7 Schedule
2010-2011


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is updated as the unit progresses.  


Day 1:  Monday, January 3

Lesson Plan:
  • Organization:  grades; lab notebooks; introduction to new unit;  discuss WebAssign assignments
  • Lab TC1 - Zeroing in On Heat
  • Discuss Zeroeth Law of Thermodynamics; do handout: Heat and Temperature (p. 1)

Homework:
  • Chapter 8:1 Reading Sheet (on WebAssign)
  • Complete Lab TC1

Announcements:
  • Final exam reviews will be sprinkled throughout this unit.  But a more intense review will be saved until the end of next week.
  • This is the last unit before the conclusion of the first semester.  We will have a quest at the end of the unit; the unit will actually continue into second semester.

Day 2:  Tuesday, January 4

Lesson Plan:
  • Discuss reading:  heat flow, cause of heat flow, system/surroundings designations and application to chemical reactions; q; dir'n of heat flow and the sign of q; endothermic vs exothermic processes (demos);  energy level diagrams; units on heat and their equivalencies;  heat-temperature change relationships;  heat capacity (C) and specific heat (c); two equations
  • Handout - Heat and Energy (p. 2)
  • Lab TC2 - Specific Heat of a Metal

Day 3:  Wednesday, January 5

Lesson Plan:
  • Discuss reading:  calorimetry;  assumptions and the system/surroundings model; coffee cup calorimeter (Figure 8.2) and water as the surroundings;  bomb calorimeter (Figure 8.3) and water as the surroundings; determining the quantity of heat gained or lost by a reaction
