Unit 1 Schedule
2010-2011


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is updated as the unit progresses.  


Day 1:  Wednesday, August 25

Lesson Plan:
  • Seat assignments, mandatory policy statements, introductions, Survival Packet
  • Discuss lab philosophy and approach; dinosaur story
  • Discuss Lab Notebooks
  • Do Obserrvation and Inference Lab 

Homework:
  • Read Survival Packet (mark Qs in side column); give careful attention to The Course Notebook and the Lab Reporting Process.
  • Complete WebAssign Survey (logon information in Survival Packet)
  • Bring goggles and a dedicated lab notebook

Announcements:
  • Bring your course notebook, packet and calculator to class everyday
  • Bring your goggles to class tomorrow;  we will put your name on them and store them in your lab drawer.

Day 2: Thursday, August 26

Lesson Plan:
  • Complete Obserrvation and Inference Lab; candle demonstration
  • Discuss policy (grades, late work, absences), WebAssign, HW assignment, lab notebook
  • Lab Safety; Jimmy story; do some demos;  discuss safety contract

Homework:
  • Read Chapter 1.1 (pp. 1-6) of your textbook; do Reading Sheet (on WebAssign)
  • Lab Safety Contract - read, obtain parent signature, return

Announcements:
  • Everyday materials are: course notebook, current unit packet, writing utensil, calculator
  • If you have not purchased and brought your goggles, bring them soon.
  • Bring your signed safety contract back to class soon!

Day 3: Friday, August 27

Lesson Plan:
  • Lab Safety: eye safety (egg demo);  hair safety (hexane vapor demo);  eye wash, shower and fire blanket location; proper smelling (ammonia vapors); aluminum chloride story; show ACS safety video
  • Discuss classifications of matter; mixtures (homogeneous vs. heterogeneous) vs. pure substances (elements vs. compounds)
  • Goggles;  survey of lab environment; safety matters

Homework:

Announcements:
  • Lab notebooks are usually collected a couple of times each unit.  You will usually have a little advanced warning and be given a scoring rubric in advance of the collection date.  It is assumed that you will make an effort to keep up with the completion of labwork as the labs are done and avoid waiting until the night before the collection date.

Day 5: Tuesday, August 31

Lesson Plan:
  • ChemThink activity:  Particulate Nature of Matter.  Do tutorial and quiz;  complete handout (pp. 3-4)as you progress.
  • Discuss Atoms, Molecules, Elements and Compounds (Packet, pp 1-2)

Homework:
  • Finish ChemThink (if not done); prepare to hand in pp. 3-4 of packet
  • Complete handout - Atoms, Molecules, Elements and Compounds (pp. 1-2)
