Unit 5 Schedule
2013-2014


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It is not fixed in stone. It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is seldom updated as the unit progresses; if we fall behind, then topics or depth of topics will be reduced in order to keep the overall pace required to maximize coverage of the entire curriculum.


Day 1: Wednesday, October 30

Lesson Plan:
  • Collect MOPs: SM8 and SM9
  • Introduce light interference; relate to sound interference (Lab S11); show two point source interference patterns (video, etc.)
  • Do Lab L1 of Unit 5 - Ripple Tank Patterns
  • Collect Lab Notebooks

  • This unit represents a great opportunity to strengthen a Quarter 3 grade.

Day 2: Thursday, October 31

Lesson Plan:
  • Return Lab Notebooks
  • Discuss two point source interference patterns; review path difference equation; do selected problems on p. 6.
  • Derive Young's equation for wavelength (p. 4); relate equation to the patterns and diagrams on p. 3; start p. 6 (ID-ing unknown values). 
  • Start Lab L2.

  • Unit 5 represents our last unit pertaining to waves, sound and light.  It is a short unit which focuses on the wavelike natureof light and the effect of varying frequency upon color perception.

Day 3: Friday, November 1

Lesson Plan:
  • Review Young's Equation (p. 1); discuss assumptions and use as a post-lab; discuss meaning of y, d, m and L; do selected questions on page 2.
  • Lab L3 - Young's Experiment

Day 4: Monday, November 4

Lesson Plan:
  • Discuss 2-path interference applications (plane and mountain reflections)
  • Discuss wave-particle duality; wave and particle properties of light; EM Spectrum and visible spectrum; answer selected Qs on pp. 7-8
  • Start polarization:  polarized vs. unpolarized light; methods of polarization; result of polarization; some demos

  • This is a very short unit with all the mathematics occuring in the first half of the unit. Concepts abound in the last half of the unit.

Day 5: Tuesday, November 5

Lesson Plan:
  • Polarization; many great demos; do pp. 9-10
  • If time alows, discuss color - rods and cones of the eye, primary colors of light; light box demo; develop the color wheel
  • Pop Quiz on Two-Point Source Interference and Polarization

  • We are officially in the last half of the unit;  stay on top of your work as it will go fast ... very fast.  Use MOP to assist in the internalization of the concepts discussed in class.

Lesson Plan:
  • Return Quiz with Answers
  • Warm-up: do pp. 9-10 on Polarization
  • Discuss color - rods and cones of the eye, primary colors of light; light box demo; develop the color wheel; do p. 13 using rules of color addition
  • If time allows: discuss complementary colors and color subtraction and do p. 14
  • Do Lab L6 (use p. 27 tape-in table)

Homework:
  • Do MOP: assignments LC1-LC4
  • Complete Labs 1, 2, 3, 6 (to be collected on Friday)
  • Read sections a-d of Lesson 2 of Light and Color Chapter (TPC); complete pp. 11-12 of your packet
