Unit 4 Schedule
2013-2014


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It is not fixed in stone. It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is seldom updated as the unit progresses; if we fall behind, then topics or depth of topics will be reduced in order to keep the overall pace required to maximize coverage of the entire curriculum.


Day "0.5": Friday, October 11

Lesson Plan:
  • Any Unit 3 MOP Codes?
  • Discuss Interference; demonstrations, web animations, pp. 9-10 of Packet
  • Begin unit on Sound: Discuss sound as a mechanical, longitudinal, pressure wave created by a vibrating object with a frequency between 25 Hz and 20000 Hz
  • Finish Lab WM6 - Vibrating Spring Lab

  • We will be focusing on the physics of sound waves and music through the month of October. Tricks learned in Unit 3 will be applied in Unit 4.

Day 2: Tuesday, October 15

Lesson Plan:
  • Check p. 1 of Packet
  • Discuss sound production and propagation - relation between dimensions of instrument and wavelength and frequency; demos
  • Sound properties: frequency, relation to pitch, human range of hearing; speed, variables effecting speed; intensity and relation to distance; p. 2
  • Get quantitative about the speed of sound: v=d/t and v =f•lambda and vair = 331 + 0.60*T; do p. 3 (selected Qs)

Day 3: Wednesday, October 16

Lesson Plan:

  • Introduction to deciBel system using CRS passage
  • Discuss deciBel system using page 5 of Packet, #1-3

Day 4: Thursday, October 17

Lesson Plan:
  • Review deciBel System; laser disc segment; demo with deciBel meter; discuss inverse square law- relate I to R and I to dB; complete p. 6 of packet
  • Do some sample calculations of I and dB using equation.
  • Introduce the Doppler Effect; laser disc segments

Lesson Plan:
  • Review Doppler effect; do p. 4
  • There will be a lecture/demonstration involving three concepts: natural frequency, forced vibration and resonance. Demonstrations include:
    • Natural frequency - tuning fork, pendulum bob
    • Forced vibration and amplification: tuning fork on whiteboard, cabinet glass, table, sound box, and ... mouth
    • Forced vibration: inverted pendulum, dual tuning forks
    • Resonance: water goblet, pop bottle, slip stick friction on singing Al rod, plastic straw
    • Resonance and Standing Waves: Chaldni patterns, lab pole, singing rods
    • Palm pipe music (maybe)
    • All time favorite: psychic resonance
  • Guidance through selected Qs on pp. 7-8 of Packet

  • Discuss closed-end air columns; demonstrations; develop mathematics on pp. 13-14, Q#1-6
  • Do Lab S4 - Closed End air column lab (collect data, discuss end-effect corrections, pool speed values)
