Unit 2 Schedule
2013-2014


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It is not fixed in stone. It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is seldom updated as the unit progresses; if we fall behind, then topics or depth of topics will be reduced in order to keep the overall pace required to maximize coverage of the entire curriculum.


Day 1: Monday, September 16

Lesson Plan:
  • Organization:  lab notebooks; Unit 2 Packet and MOP Sheets; test comments (getting a plan), introduce Unit 2
  • Refraction Demos: discuss the what, when, why, and when not; discuss v = c/n, Theta i and Theta R
  • Direction of Bending Lab; discuss the how (in which direction) of refraction; FST and SFA; do/complete lab
  • A&W Root Beer Demo

    Day 2: Tuesday, September 17

    Lesson Plan:
      Sports Assembly - 40 minute classes
      • Warm-up: Light Refraction (p. 1) w/Key
      • Post-lab RL2; discuss the direction of bending, FST and SFA
      • Discuss optical density and speed, v = c/n equation; do Qs #1-11 on pp. 3-4
      • Collect data for How Much? Lab (RL4); record data in Logger Pro for graphing purposes

      Day 3: Wednesday, September 18

      Lesson Plan:
      • Warm-up:  p. 4, #11-12 of Packet
      • Demonstration: p. 4, #13
      • Introduce SOH CAH TOA and right triangle trigonometry; do pp. 5-6, #1-4 with two calculator types
      • How Much? Lab (RL4);  graph, print and analyze on Logger Pro; pool class results for slope and COR; relate to Snell's Law

      Day 4: Thursday, September 19

      Lesson Plan:
      • SOH CAH TOA ; complete pp. 5-6, #2, 3, 4, ...
      • Discuss origin of the Snell's Law equation; do one Snell's Law calculation and diagram; discuss algebra manipulation and calculator use; use pp. 7-8, #1, 2 , ...

      • There is one week left in the quarter;  sublevels 1-3 of MOP will be due at the end of the quarter.  Your lab notebook will also be turned in for the last time this quater on the next physics day.

      • Using Snell's Law to analyze a layer problem (p. 9 of packet)
      • Combining Snell's Law and SOH CAH TOA to analyze a refraction situation (p. 10, Q#8)
      • Using Snell's Law to find the index of refraction (p. 8 of packet)

      • Discuss using Snell's Law and its use with SOH CAH TOA to analyze physical situations;  p. 10, Q#7 and submarine problem
      • Complete the Unknown n Lab (RL5)

      • Introduce the concept of total internal reflection w/Demos

          • Total internal reflection: definition, two requirements, meaning of a critical angle;  many great demos!
          • Review TIR: do #1-4 on p. 11; demo R & R with green laser and fish tank; do p. 11+, #5-8 Quickly
          • Do It's Critical Lab (RL7); pool data and post-lab 
          • Discuss critical angle calculations;  complete p. 12

          • Check Ray Diagrams on pp. 15-17 (QUICKLY)
          • Lens Equation Mathematics - equations and sign conventions; do selected Qs on pp. 19-20
          • Start the Magnification Ratio Lab (Lab RL11)

          • Object-Image relationships (Web Animation)
          • Do difficult Lens Equation problems (ZINGERS on p. 21-22)
          • Review critical angle and R&R (WebAnimation)
          • Work time: complete Lab RL11; work on last WebAssign

          • Prepare Lab notebook for submission (labs RL5, RL7, and RL11)
          • Prepare for Test.  Visit The Review Session.
