Unit 1 Schedule
2013 - 2014


The following schedule information was prepared at the beginning of the unit.  It is not fixed in stone. It's role is to serve as an organizational tool for students to find both required and helpful resources relevant to daily activities. The schedule is seldom updated as the unit progresses; if we fall behind, then topics or depth of topics will be reduced in order to keep the overall pace required to maximize coverage of the entire curriculum.


Day 1: Wednesday, August 21

Lesson Plan:
  • Seat assignments. Get acquainted. Mandatory policy statements. Contracts. Show and tell of web site; homework. Pass out packets, notebooks, etc..
  • Discuss lab basis of course; logistics of lab use.
  • Introduce Reflection and Mirrors unit; demos on the importance of reflection.

Homework:
  • Course survey on WebAssign.
  • WebAssign Contract
  • Get acquainted with ChemPhys web site and associated pages.
  • Read the ChemPhys Survival Packet. Identify questions by placing marks in the side columns. Give particular attention to the information about the Course Notebook and lab reports.

Announcements:
  • Everyday materials are: course notebook, current unit packet, writing utensil, calculator

Day 2: Thursday, August 22

Lesson Plan
  • Lab Activity: How does light reflect off a mirror? (develop a claim that is supported by evidence) Report at m.socrative.com (Room: henderson).
  • Discuss pp. 3-6 of Survival Packet (Any Qs?)
  • Define the law of reflection and introduce terminology; discuss Packet, p. 1

Homework:
  • Finish WebAssign Course Survey and Contract
  • Get acquainted with ChemPhys web site and associated pages.
  • Read from The Physics Classroom Tutorial: Reflection and Mirrors, Lesson 1a, 1b
  • Do #9-10 on p. 2 of Unit 1 Packet

Day 3: Friday, August 23

Lesson Plan:
  • MOP Demonstration/Trouble-shooting
  • Review the Law of Reflection - Packet, pp. 1-2 (Quickly)
  • Discuss What is an image? Parallax demo with large mirror and two cylinders. Web animation.
  • Discuss details of course notebooks and lab reports.
  • Do Lab RM2: Plane Mirror Images: submit results to a Google Spreadsheet (found on your Drive)

Homework:
  • Minds On Physics - Reflection and Mirrors, Ass't 1
  • Finish Lab RM2 (if not done) 
  • Bring WebAssign Contract (if not done)

  • Concerning your course notebook: remember the left side/right side requirement

Day 4: Monday, August 26

Lesson Plan:
  • Discuss MOP problems (if any); trouble-shoot
  • TIP:  Tape pp. 7-8 of Survival Packet into lab notebook
  • Complete page 5;  discussion. Web animation.
  • Begin ray diagramming:  use pp. 7-8 of the unit packet.
  • Do Lab RM3 as a demonstration Lab

Homework:
  • Do Unit 1 Packet, page 8. Use TPC page (if needed)
  • MOP - do assignments RM1, RM2,  and RM4 (and maybe RM3) of the Reflection and Mirrors Module
  • Catch up on TPC Reading (as needed)


    Announcements:
    • Your course notebook will be collected at the end of the week for the first round of grading; you must keep up with the task of completing labs and keeping your notebook current.

    Day 5: Tuesday, August 27

    Lesson Plan:
    • Discuss specular vs. diffuse reflection; demos; relate to image formation (Flickr photos); discuss selected Qs on pp. 3-4
    • Discuss ray diagrams; check p. 8 of the unit 1 packet; do last 2 Qs on the page
    • If time allows; start Lab RM4 - What Portion ...? Lab; use page 31 graphic; submit results to a Google Spreadsheet

    Homework:
    • Do MOP: Reflection and Mirrors - assignments RM1- RM4
    • Complete Labs RM2
    • Catch up on TPC Reading. Lesson 2a-d (as needed)

      • Right angle mirrors -  pp. 11-12 of unit packet; do #1-3
      • Lab RM6 - collect data and attempt a conclusion
      • Discuss Parallel Mirror Systems; do p.12, #4; introduce Lab RM7 (as time allows)

      • TPC Reading. Lesson 3a-e Reading
      • Begin brainstorming efforts on Lab RM7

      • Discuss one last parallel mirror situation: progress from diagram to data to prediction to equation to model; discuss Lab RM7
      • Do Lab RM8 Exploring Curved Mirror Lab
      • Discuss Spherical Mirrors - start pp. 15-16 of Packet (selected Qs)

        • Return test, discuss; discuss necessary changes in learning strategies
