### Studying Suggestions for Circular Motion Quiz

2013-2014

There will be a very short quiz on Thursday, March 13. The quiz will be a one-page quiz, covering a both sides of a sheet of paper. The equations for speed, centripetal acceleration and net force will be provided. Other equations (Fgrav) will have to be committed to memory. Other than a calculator, no other helps will be provided nor allowed. Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and problem-types to be assessed on this quiz:

1. An understanding of the motion characteristics of objects moving in a circle and the ability to identify the direction of the velocity, acceleration and net force vectors at various locations along the circular path. (Packet, pp. 3-4, 7; MOP, assts 1-2)

2. An understanding of the principle of inertia and its relationship to motion in circles, including a strong belief in the centripetal force requirement for circular motion. (Packet, pp. 5-6; MOP, assts 3-4)

3. An understanding of the mathematics of circular motion and the ability to use circular motion equations to solve simple algebraic word problems. (Packet, pp. 8-12; WebAssign Sets 1-2)

4. An ability to conduct a free-body analysis for an object moving in a circle and to use the analysis to determine the acceleration of the object or the value of an individual force. (Packet, pp. 8-12; MOP, asst CG5; WebAssign Sets 1-2)
